A gummy smile, also known as excessive gingival display, is when an excessive amount of gum is shown above the top teeth when you smile. This is very common in both men and women, however, it can cause individuals to feel self-conscious about their smile. The good news is that a gummy smile can be simply and effectively corrected using Botulinum Toxin Injections. This safe and naturally purified protein works by reducing the activity of the muscle in the upper lip.
One of the most common causes of a gummy smile is a hyperactive muscle in the upper lip. A gummy smile can also be caused by a thin upper lip – which exposes more of the upper gum when smiling or a high lip line – which can cause your upper lip to move higher than usual when you smile.

During our Gummy Smile Treatment, Botulinum Toxin will be carefully injected into both sides of the mouth in the creases that join up to the nose. These injections help to weaken the muscles and reduce the elevation of the upper lip when smiling. A visible improvement can usually be seen around three days after treatment; however, the final result can be visible up to two weeks after the treatment.
Clients are still able to retain their regular facial movements, but the top lip will not rise as far above the teeth. For clients who have a gummy smile as a result of a thin upper lip, the practitioner will add some subtle volume with dermal fillers to enhance the lip area, correct any asymmetry and prevent the lip rising too high above the teeth.

Your first step towards a more confident smile begins with a consultation. One of our highly experienced and friendly Treatment Coordinators will take your full medical history and listen to your concerns, before discussing your most suitable Smile Design treatment options.
During your appointment with the practitioner you will have the opportunity to discuss the treatment process thoroughly. They will review your full medical history; assess the area you would like to treat and discuss the results you are looking to achieve prior to treatment.
On the day of your treatment, you will have the opportunity to meet with your Medical Practitioner, who will run through the process again and discuss any final questions. Your Practitioner will then assess your smile and decide where to administer the injections. Botulinum Toxin Injections are a quick and minimally invasive treatment that usually take no more than 30 mins to complete. Numbing cream can be applied if needed.
After the treatment, the area may feel tender and you may see slight redness, swelling or bruising, which will subside over the next few days. A visible improvement can usually be seen around 3 days after treatment; however, the final result can take up to 14 days.

The result of Botulinum Toxin Injections usually last for up to six months. A plan for regular follow-up treatments can be created by your Treatment Coordinator to maintain optimal results.
This treatment uses a very fine needle, making the injections virtually painless. You may feel a light ’sting’ sensation, however a numbing cream is usually applied to make our patients feel as comfortable as possible.
The one to one consultation with our Treatment Coordinators will determine if this procedure is suitable for you. We will also asses your medical history to ensure that this treatment is safe. Please inform us of any pre-existing medical conditions you may have, including any medication that you are currently taking.
There is no downtime to this procedure, meaning that you can continue with your normal daily activities straight after treatment.
Some medicines and supplements may need to be stopped before treatment, these will be discussed in your consultation. You may also need to avoid using certain products on your skin, on the day of your treatment.
