Our expert team of dermatologists at EF MEDISPA understand that poorly healed scars can often feel painful or tender and can also affect how you feel about your appearance. We offer a wide range of treatments to reduce the appearance of scarring, including an effective hypertrophic and keloid scar treatment using steroid injections.
All treatments are tailored to the individual and personal experiences and results may vary. We recommend a one to one consultation with our Treatment Coordinators to discuss your treatment options.
A keloid scar is a tough, raised scar that often grows larger than the original wound. Keloid scars usually begin as a red or purple colour, before becoming brown or sometimes pale. Keloids are irregularly shaped and tend to enlarge progressively. Unlike scars, keloids do not fade over time.
Keloid scars are commonly found in areas such as the chest, head, neck and earlobes, but they can appear anywhere on the body. The surface of this type of scar is often shiny, hairless, hard and rubbery. Keloid scars can cause pain and discomfort and even occasionally lead to restricted movement if the scar is located over or near a joint.
Keloid scars tend to occur after the skin has been damaged or wounded by cuts, burns, acne or chicken pox. However, they can also appear spontaneously with no obvious sign of injury or skin trauma. Keloid scars can affect anyone, but they are more common in people with dark skin.
Keloid scars can be treated using a course of corticosteroid injections. A specially trained dermatologist will inject the steroid solution directly into the keloid scar, which will help to diminish its appearance. The steroids work by breaking down the bonds between collagen fibres, which helps to reduce the amount of scar tissue beneath the skin.

This treatment may cause some discomfort, in particular a slight stinging sensation when the injection is made. This procedure is quick and requires no downtime, so you can usually return to normal activities straight after treatment.
Steroid injections are a safe and effective way of treating keloid scars and usually takes 15 – 30 minutes per session. Most keloid scars require around 6 to 8 sessions, depending on the size and location of the scar.
With steroid treatments you should notice an improvement after your first treatment, however you will require several sessions to help the scar to flatten out and fade in colour.
In most cases the results are permanent, however very occasionally keloid scars can return to the same area.
