Wrinkles are a natural and inescapable part of getting older. As the skin ages, it becomes thinner and looses its elasticity, which causes wrinkles to appear.

In this article we take a closer look at wrinkles, their main causes and what you can do to prevent and reduce them…

What are wrinkles?

Also known as a rhytid, a wrinkle is a fold or creasing in the skin. Wrinkles commonly appear as a result of age.

What causes wrinkles?

Age: One of the main causes of wrinkles is age. As we age, our skin tends to lose collagen and elastin, which are the supportive and connective tissues that make it look plump and youthful.

Lifestyle: Poor lifestyle and environmental conditions can also be contributing factors to lined skin. For example, smoking, excessive alcohol and sun damage, can all cause the skin to develop wrinkles.

Sun exposure: Too much sun exposure can result in the skin appearing dry, wrinkly and tired. Sun protection is without question the best way to prevent skin from ageing. You must use sun protection every day, not just when it is sunny.

How can you prevent or reduce wrinkles?

Diet: Include antioxidant rich foods into your diet and anything with Omega-3, for example wild salmon, nuts and avocados. Also ensure you keep your skin and body hydrated by drinking plenty of water each day.

Skincare: It is a good idea to invest in an effective skincare product that can help to combat the visible signs of ageing. We recommend Skinceuticals which is a range of advanced skin care products, specifically formulated to maximise the health & beauty of your skin.

We also believe it is vital to wear daily sun protection, so we created the Sunshine Block SPF 50+ from OMNI by Esther. It contains a combination of clinically proven filters to protect the skin against the harmful effects of UV rays and will leave your skin feeling soothed and hydrated.

Facials: Undergoing regular facials helps to nurture and smooth out your skin. Regular facial appointments can be an effective preventative measure for fine lines and wrinkles. At EF MEDISPA we offer a broad spectrum of facials that restore, rejuvenate and redefine the skin. Our most popular type of facials are the Biologique Recherche facials, which use products that are packed with botanical, marine and biological extracts to gently restore, rebalance and moisturise the skin.

Injectables: Injectable options, such as anti-wrinkle injectables and dermal fillers, can be used on the face, hands and décolletage to restore the skin and reveal a more youthful appearance.

Profhilo is a groundbreaking injectable treatment that uses high concentrations of natural Hyaluronic Acid (HA) to hydrate and improve the skin’s texture and elasticity.

Can wrinkles be reversed?

Modern technology advancements mean that there are ways that you can help to reverse the appearance of wrinkles. At EF MEDISPA we offer a range of surgical and non-surgical treatments that can help to restore and rejuvenate your skin. Some of the treatments you could consider are:

Dermastamp, Mesotherapy, Pixel Laser, Ultraformer and Profhilo. These treatments can all help to stimulate the production of collagen and soften the appearance of fine lines on the face, neck and décolletage area.

Some other options you could discuss with our expert team are the Quick Lift – often labelled as the ‘lunchtime face lift’ - This is a non-invasive laser treatment that helps to improve your skin tone and texture by targeting fine lines and wrinkles; or our latest surgical procedure the Temporal Lift, which focuses on the temporal area and the upper half of the face. This procedure aims to smooth out wrinkles from the forehead and around the eye area by lifting the skin.

Contact our friendly team of therapists at EF MEDISPA to discuss your specific concerns. They will be happy to offer advice or help to devise a bespoke treatment plan, that is tailored to your individual needs.
