Beauty myths: Do you know which are true or false

Beauty Myths: True or FalseThere are lots of different beauty myths out there, and it’s hard to always know which ones to believe. At EF MEDISPA, we hear our fair share of beauty myths, some of which are truly outrageous, however there are also some that we do believe to be true. Today, we are here to advise on which beauty myths you can trust, and which ones you can laugh off!

‘Tooth paste gets rid of spots/pimples’

We had to start with the beauty myth that we get asked most frequently, will tooth paste get rid of spots? We are afraid to tell you that no, tooth paste will not get rid of your spots. If you suffer from regular breakouts then putting tooth paste on your spots will actually do more harm than good, it dries out the skin which can cause even worse spots to appear. The best way to reduce breakouts is through ensuring you’re cleansing your skin daily, and using an exfoliating acid toner to help balance the skins pH level.

‘SPF is actually more harmful for your skin then good’

We’re not entirely sure where this myth came from, but the answer is false, SPF is not more harmful for your skin. If any of your skin is exposed daily (e.g. your face) then you should be using an SPF daily too. There’s a reason many people suffer with pigmentation on their face more than on the rest of their body and that is due to the fact that they have not been protecting it from the sun properly. Even if you cannot see the sun, the UV rays are still there and can still be causing damage to your skin.

Woman applying makeup‘Sleeping in your make-up will cause spots’

This beauty myth is in fact true. Whilst we’re asleep our skin goes through renewal and sheds off the dead skin cells for new ones to emerge, however if you’re skin has a layer of make-up on then it makes this process much harder for your skin. It will cause the pores to become clogged, leading to blemishes and breakouts.

‘You can close your pores’

Unfortunately, this myth is false, you are not able close your pores. The skin has pores for a reason, they are actually small hair follicles and contain a sebaceous gland which produces oil. However, some people suffer with naturally larger pores than others, and due to the sebaceous gland, they fill up with oil and sebum which can cause them to become more visible. Although you are unable to close the pores, there are ways to minimise the appearance of them and clean them. You can find out more about the different treatments we offer to help with large pores here.

Woman applying mascara‘Throw out your mascara after 3 months’

This one is also true, although you may not want to throw out your mascara every 3 months, feeling as though you’re wasting product it is very unhygienic to not do so. Ever heard of eyelash mites? They’re tiny little mites which are attracted to old mascaras, once they have landed on your eye lashes they reproduce and feed off dead skin cells and oil. Mites can cause irritation in the eyes, making them feel itchy. If this doesn’t put you of using old mascara, we’re not sure what will!
