A Comprehensive Guide to Microneedling

Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy, is such a huge trend in the beauty industry right now. It’s hailed as the latest answer to those of us seeking more youthful, radiant and smooth skin.

Especially on the sensitive facial area, puncturing the skin can sound rather scary, so of course, some you may be concerned if you don’t know much about the procedure. However, at EF MEDISPA we’ve been practicing this innovative technique for quite some time and can assure you that it it’s nothing to worry about. In fact, it’s one of our favourite skin repairing treatments for the face and body. So, to put your mind at ease, we’re going to answer a few commonly asked questions about the technique, its safety and what results you can expect.

What does microneedling do?

The technique is straightforward: it involves puncturing the skin with small needles in order to trigger it to repair itself. It may sound scary, but your skin is so responsive that it takes very little to encourage the healing response; the needles used are extremely fine and around 0.5 mm to 1 mm in length. This is a non-invasive treatment.

At EF MEDISPA, we use several targeted methods of microneedling. These are Dermastamp, which creates vertical micro-perforations; Dermapen, which uses 12 microneedles; Microfirm, combining a single microneedle with radiofrequency technology; and Mesotherapy, which uses a single microneedle to deliver nutrients into the skin. The most suitable microneedling method for your skin will be determined by your Treatment Co-ordinator.

How does microneedling work?

In response to the tiny perforations, your skin produces increased amounts of collagen and elastin in order to repair the perceived damage. As the amount of damage caused by microneedling is so negligible, these extra fibres aren’t needed for extensive repair and so go towards improving your skin’s appearance instead. The increased collagen improves your skin’s firmness, while the elastin reduces sagging.

Does microneedling work?

Countless studies have been conducted on the effects of microneedling, and many have found that, when carried out by a professional Dermatologist, microneedling can be hugely effective in treating a number of skin concerns including uneven skin texture, acne scars, fine lines and wrinkles and many more.

Can you microneedle at home?

There are a number of at-home microneedling devices available, but the effectiveness of these have not proven to outweigh the risk of damage and infection. The needles in these devices are more blunt than those used by dermatologists which means that they don’t really penetrate the skin. This means you won’t get the same effects as professional microneedling, but there is a higher risk of infection associated with at-home microneedling. At EF MEDISPA, we use sterile, single-use needles.

Does microneedling hurt?

When the smallest needles are used, many people find that it doesn’t hurt at all. It may become more uncomfortable if larger needles are required to treat more serious skin concerns such as acne scarring, but a numbing agent can be used to keep you comfortable throughout. You may experience some itchiness for a few days after the treatment – this is normal and is a sign that your skin is healing itself.

What should you put on your face after microneedling?

The great thing about microneedling is that, as well as encouraging neocollagenesis and elastin production, it opens your skin up and allows your skincare to better permeate. Your skin will remain more receptive for a few days, so we recommend you make the most of this by using an Intensive Moisturising Repair Mask at home after treatment. If you are dealing with thinning hair, we also offer Dermastamp with Advanced Hair Complex+ serum to help combat hair loss.

At EF MEDISPA, your Treatment Co-ordinator will discuss your skin concerns prior to the treatment and create a personalised blend of vitamins, minerals and Hyaluronic Acid to target your specific concerns and leave you with a glowing, radiant complexion. They will also tell you how often to microneedle for best results.
