Expert Panel: Dr Marco on Dermal Fillers & Injectables

Dr MarcoAs part of our expert panel series, we would like to re-introduce you to Dr Marco, our highly experienced Practitioner performing Anti-Wrinkle Injectables. This is part 2 of our 2 part blog with Dr Marco (if you haven’t already read part 1 you can do so here), where he fills us in on the most popular areas for Dermal Fillers, how they work and the safety precautions that should be taken.

Which areas are you finding the most popular with clients for Dermal Fillers?

The trend has changed. Fillers were used to address fine lines and wrinkles, whilst the tendency is now to inject fillers to plump and support particular areas of the face to give back a younger and healthier look.

Dermal fillersCheek Fillers are very popular. As we age, the cheeks deflate and excess skin falls toward the jawline, making this the widest part of the face is now at the jawline. Replacing the volume lost and supporting dermal structures will restore that youthful appearance lost with the aging process.

Lip enhancement is also very popular and it is mainly used to improve the appearance of the lips and their overall shape and volume.

Another treatment with fillers becoming increasingly popular is tear trough dermal filler to help improve concerns with eye bags, dark circles, sunken and tired looking eyes. Tear trough filler can completely transform a patient’s face from tired and sunken to looking bright, rejuvenated and awake. This treatment is provided into a very delicate and sensitive area therefore has to be performed by a highly recommended and experienced Practitioner.

What safety precautions should you take when having Anti-Wrinkle Injectables or Fillers?

To ensure a good experience, before any Anti-Wrinkle Injectable or Dermal Filler treatment you should select a Doctor and a clinic who are reputable and certified. A well performed Anti-Wrinkle Injectable and Filler treatment is highly related to the skills and techniques of the injector, so do your research and find a Doctor who specialises in facial anatomy and has been successfully administering Anti-Wrinkle Injectables and Fillers (with few patient complaints and/ or complications) for several years already.

Be transparent with your Doctor. For your safety, tell your Doctor as much about your medical history as possible so he/she can determine whether you are a good candidate. Tell your Doctor:

  • What medication, supplements, herbs, etc. you are taking
  • What allergies you have
  • If you have any medical conditions, illnesses, or diseases
  • If you have or will have any medical procedures (i.e. recent surgery, other treatments, etc.)
  • If you are pregnant, breast-feeding, or trying to conceive
  • If this is your first time getting Anti-Wrinkle Injectables or Fillers, tell your Doctor.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. Make a list of questions you want to ask your Doctor and bring it with you to your consultation. For example ask how much the treatment will cost, how many units of Anti-Wrinkle Injectables or Filler you will need, how long the Doctor has been practicing etc. Ask about side effects, risks, and how you should take care of your skin after cosmetic injections. It's better to hear it straight from your Doctor in particular about what he will do if something goes wrong.

Are Anti-Wrinkle Injectables & Fillers for everybody and how do they work?

Beautiful womanBoth treatments are used on a wide range of patients and are primarily used for skin/facial rejuvenation, reshaping and the reduction of fine lines and wrinkles.

Anti-Wrinkle Injectables are injected into muscles, they will “freeze” the muscles to improve the look of moderate to severe frown lines between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). It can also be injected into the area around the side of the eyes to improve the look of moderate to severe crow’s feet lines and into the forehead. The effect will last for three to four months.

Facial fillers are also used for skin rejuvenation and the reduction of lines and wrinkles but in suitable candidates, fillers are primarily used to add structure and volume to the face. Fillers help to restore the volume loss that naturally begins to occur when we reach our late thirties, and in turn gives a fresher, brighter appearance. Fillers can also be used to give a non-surgical face lift giving a more youthful appearance (facial reshaping/lifting).

With the aging process, there is a decrease of natural collagen and elastin in the skin and as a result the skin becomes dryer, thinner and less able to fix itself. Babies have plentiful amounts of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) in their body, but as we get older this store of HA diminishes, leaving the skin less well supported, and so lines and wrinkles develop. By lifting and smoothing targeted folds and wrinkles by adding volume, dermal fillers can make a difference to a person’s appearance, giving them a fresher look.
